R. Belén Barreiro

R. Belén Barreiro obtained a degree in Physics from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela in 1995 and a PhD in Science from the Universidad de Cantabria in 1999, where she completed her doctoral thesis at the Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA). After a postdoctoral period at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), she returned to IFCA as a Ramón y Cajal researcher. Since 2021, she has been a Research Scientist at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) at the same institute, serving as Deputy Group Leader of the Observational Cosmology and Instrumentation Group.

Her research focuses on the analysis of cosmological data, particularly from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), including diffuse and compact component separation techniques, studies of CMB isotropy, and the characterization of foreground emissions. She played an important role in the scientific exploitation of data from the European Space Agency’s Planck mission, which has provided the most comprehensive full-sky observations of the CMB. She is also actively involved in the QUIJOTE experiment and the JAXA LiteBIRD mission. She has authored more than 270 scientific publications and numerous contributions to international conferences, including the official presentation of the final Planck Legacy CMB maps in 2019.

She is or has been the Principal Investigator of ten competitive research projects, including the coordination of the European project RadioForegroundsPlus (2024–2026), and also acts as guarantor of the IFCA María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence. She is a formal collaborator of the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), where she serves as one of the programme managers for the Universe Sciences (CDU) research area. She has organized several international scientific meetings, including three conferences of the Spanish Cosmology Network (2023–2025), network that she coordinated. In addition, she has supervised six doctoral theses and regularly participates in science outreach activities, mainly in schools and educational centers in Cantabria.
