At IFCA, we have regular opportunities to have new people joining our group at all stages of the academic career, from PhD candidates to postdocs and tenure-track-like positions. Most of these positions are open national or regional competitive calls from both public or private funding agencies. A good summary of the scholarships and fellowships that exist in Spain (both at national and regional level) can be found in this webpage. However, new openings funded by grant money may appear eventually, so feel free to check this portal regularly for potential opportunities beyond the regular ones summarized in the link above. Note that, since IFCA is a Maria de Maeztu Excellence center, we can benefit also from La Caixa Fellowships.

Some of these opportunities are:
PhD candidates
PhDs in Spain last 4 years and require 300 credits of undergrad (usually bachelor+master) to be able to enrol. Undergrad marks are usually very important for the outcome of the scholarship’s selection process. Undergrad students who did their bachelor and masters abroad will have to compute an equivalence for their marks. You can find here the tables of equivalence.

FPU: national call, usually opens in October to start the next October. You need to be from Spain or live in Spain to be able to apply.

Concepción Arenal: local call within the University of Cantabria, usually opens in December to start at the beginning of the summer.

La Caixa Inphinit: Either for people of any nationality living in Spain or Portugal (“retaining” mode) or abroad (“incoming” mode), usually open in January and the results are published at the end of spring.
Postdoctoral fellowships

Juan de La Cierva: 3-year junior postdoctoral fellowships (< 2 years since completion of PhD). Usually opens in November and results are confirmed one year later (preliminary results published at the beginning of the summer).

La Caixa Junior Leadership: 3-year senior postdoctoral fellowships (2-7 years after completion of PhD) along with a sizable budget. Either for people of any nationality living in Spain or Portugal (“retaining” mode) or abroad (“incoming” mode), usually open during the summer and the results are published at the end of winter.
Tenure-track-like positions
The main track to enter to permanent research positions in Spain is through these fellowships.
- Ramón y Cajal: 5-year positions that should lead to the track for a permanent position. Usually opens in November and results are confirmed one year later (preliminary results published at the beginning of the summer).
